Raising Your Chances of Finding a Perfect Online Date

With 1 out of 6 marriages in the United States originated online, and almost 30% of dating couples meet on the Internet, we are most likely find our romantic partners in online dating websites. However, with the very competitive nature of online dating, 56% of men who created an online dating profile do not even get a single message, while 97% of online dating users quit within three months.

So what should you do to raise your chances of finding that perfect partner online? Katharine Blodget of Business Insider collected the statistics so you won’t have to.

Paid dating sites raises your chances – You are twice as likely to get a date as a member of a paid-membership dating site like Match.com compared to a free dating site like PlentyOfFish.com. The fact that you would pay $20 to $60 a month for membership means you and your fellow members are serious about finding a date online. However, it is best to do your research first before you enter your credit card details.

Avoid taking pictures with flash – In a study conducted by dating site OkCupid.com, flash adds seven years to your face. White light has a way of exposing your facial lines and skin texture too prominently, which is why it is best to take a profile photo indoors during daytime without using flash.

Men should not smile – OkCupid also discovered that men who look away from the camera and do not smile are more likely to get a response. Dating experts guess that guys who look at the camera may appear intimidating to women and get less responses in the process. Meanwhile, not looking at the camera gives off a “strong appearance” and a “more mysterious aura.” Women, meanwhile, should smile at the camera because it is more inviting to the opposite sex.

If you have a great body, show it but classy – Women in their early 20s who use profile pictures that show their cleavage get 24% more responses, but that number jumps to 79% by age 32. Men who show off their good abs also get more responses, but it would be less “douchey” if they do not appear to be showing their abdominals off deliberately like diving into a pool or while playing volleyball.

Focus only on active users – You are 60% less likely to get a response if you message someone who logged into the dating site one to three weeks ago. It is best to send a message to someone who is “online now.” In return, you should also access your profile last least once a week. Leaving your dating profile idle for more than three weeks would give you zero chance of response.

Keep your profile updated – Even the most minor of updates on your profile moves it to the top of the profile heap whenever the sites’ search engines are utilized.
