How To Prevent Date Rape

date rapeMost people think that rapists are strangers. The scary part is that about half of rape victims know who attacked them – boyfriends, dates, etc. The good news is, date rapes can be prevented.

Preventing date rapes

Do not get drunk at parties. Alcohol makes you behave differently. It decreases awareness and lessens inhibitions. It is wisest to stay sober and lucid, especially if you are in the company of the people you hardly know.

Keep a close eye on your drink. Even if it is just a soda, keep your eye on it. Rapists can easily slip drugs on your drink. Some of the most common are rohypnol ("roofies"), gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), and ketamine. These drugs can cause you to lose consciousness.

If you lose sight of your drink, do not drink anymore from it. Drugs may have been added to it in your absence. If you are severely dehydrated and there is no running water where you are and if you cannot wait until later to drink, call an ambulance. Intravenous fluids may be necessary. The main thing is do not get a drink from the people there. Get another drink, because it’s not worth you getting raped.

Do not go to secluded areas with your date before you are sure you can trust him/her. Go on group dates until you are comfortable going on solo dates with your boyfriend/girlfriend.

Do not date complete strangers. Go out people you are familiar with – friends of friends, etc.

Know exactly what you are looking for when you get into a relationship. If you do not know yet, ask the person you are dating if he/she can give you time to figure things out. If have just started dating, do not flirt, lie around or send signals that don’t feel well. Most importantly, do not let your date (or anyone) pressure you into doing anything you do not feel comfortable with.

Avoid being alone with anyone who makes you uneasy or uncomfortable. Trust your instincts. They will tell you which situations to avoid.

Other helpful tips

If you feel uncomfortable in any way, tell your date or just get out of the situation altogether. Do not doubt your instincts or tell yourself your instinct is wrong or you misjudged your date.

You can always drink water.

Go to parties with a sober friend or a friend who does not drink so he/she can keep an eye on you and make sure nothing bad happens.

Always carry your car keys. That way, you can always get away. You can also use your pointy keys as a weapon, if needed.

Make sure you have enough cash for a cab ride home. It’s emergency cash. Do not spend it. You may need it for other things such as being left on the side of a road, or something.

If you really have to, disable a would-be-rapist so you can get away.

Open your drinks yourself.

If you see condoms, or other sexually oriented materials and they make you feel uncomfortable, don’t say anything. Just leave.

Don’t share your drinks with other people.

If you are stranded, call your parents. Being grounded is not as bad as being raped or killed. You can always tell your parents or friend things like this.

Put a parent or close friend on speed dial. If you are ever in a compromising situation, you can just press a number and be connected to your parent or friend.

Warnings

If he/she starts touching tell them forcefully to stop or walk away. Always try to be aware of the situation you are in.
